My Understanding of Trauma, Depression, Anxiety, and Addiction
I have found that working with any psychological problem usually involves dealing with some sort of trauma. While on the surface it may seem that people have different issues like anger problems, difficulty getting out of bed, worrying about the future, binge drinking, or constant disappointment in themselves, in the end if often relates to habits and defenses built up around an old wound. To uproot the issue means to deal with that trauma, to close the wound.
To treat these old and deep wounds we need to apply a variety of medicines and bandages. By rewriting the story and finding previously unrecognized strengths, narrative therapy builds a new story. By working with body-based therapies, the pre-verbal trauma, and the parts of trauma that are below analysis are finally touched. Through IFS the parts of us that are exiled or harming us by trying to protect us are identified and recalibrated. EMDR allows specific events to be reprocessed and softened. Employing interventions from CBT are integrated into daily life. Therapy is not a one-size-fits weekly meeting, it is highly individual and adaptable art created between the therapist and client.
