Common Concerns
People come to counselling for depression with concerns such as:
- low mood on most days, for weeks at a time
- losing interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy
- tiredness, or sleeping much more or less than usual
- finding it hard to concentrate or make decisions
- feeling worthless or guilty
- pulling away from people
You do not need a diagnosis to start. If you are having thoughts of ending your life, please go to Emergency contacts now.
Is Counselling Good for Depression?
For many people, yes. The UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) lists several talking therapies as first-line options for less severe depression, including CBT, behavioural activation, group mindfulness and counselling. It recommends choosing among them together with the person. For more severe depression, NICE also considers medication alongside therapy. That decision rests with a doctor, and counselling can continue alongside their care.
Which Therapist Is Best for Depression?
Research has not found one type of therapist who suits everyone. Useful questions to ask: is the therapist trained in approaches with evidence for depression, such as CBT? Do you understand how they work? Do you feel able to talk to them honestly? The free intro call is a chance to find out.
Getting Help for Depression in Myanmar or Thailand
If you are looking for depression counselling in Yangon, Bangkok or anywhere else in Myanmar or Thailand, sessions take place online and in English, and the free 15-minute intro call is a simple first step. If low mood comes with physical symptoms, or you want to consider medication, see a doctor as well. Counselling can carry on alongside medical care.
How Sessions Work
Sessions are online and last 60 or 90 minutes. Early sessions look at what keeps low mood in place and what small changes are possible now. Over time, the work can turn to what lies underneath, such as loss, old patterns or past trauma.
Methods Used
- CBT techniques, including behavioural activation: rebuilding activities that matter to you, step by step.
- Mindfulness, for noticing low mood without being pulled under by it. A structured eight-week course, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, has been found to lower the risk of depression returning (Kuyken and colleagues, 2016).
- Narrative therapy, for questioning the hopeless stories depression tells.
- Somatic work and parts work, when depression is linked to past trauma.
